Abstract:
This case provides students of journalism, law and international affairs with a vivid picture of the effects of political and physical intimidation on the press. When a democratic government succeeds military rule in Guatemala, former engineer Julio Godoy is drawn to journalism. After a quick rise to prominence, he finds himself unwittingly testing the limits of tolerance in a nation where death squads can target dissenters.

Learning Objective:
The case raises the moral questions faced by Godoy as he ponders whether to choose exile or risk death.
