Abstract:
This case examines the finances of a Massachusetts charter school three years after its launch. (While the financial information is simplified, the case is otherwise factual.) The mission and history of the school are described in some detail, and students are provided with actual and pro forma income statements and balance sheets, as well as other pertinent data. Students are put in the position of financially sophisticated advisors to the school's Board of Trustees, and are asked to offer comments and guidance on some strategic options under consideration in light of the school's current and prospective financial situation.

Learning Objective:
The case is used at around the tenth session of an introductory financial management module, and requires basic familiarity with financial statements and their role in strategic public and nonprofit management.
